ABOUT HANNAH

Hannah is an academic and writer based in Naarm/Melbourne Australia


Hannah (she/her) is a Senior Lecturer in Cultural Studies at the University of Melbourne. Hannah’s academic work sits within the field of Critical Femininity Studies, covering a range of diverse topics, including: queer femme identity, queer and feminist theory, bisexuality, salons and beauty culture, queer fandom, and romantic crush culture.

Though she is now located within the interdisciplinary space of Cultural Studies, Hannah’s educational background spans Philosophy, Political Science, Psychology, Sociology, and Gender Studies.

Hannah has produced three academic books: sole author of Queering Femininity: Sexuality, Feminism and the Politics of Presentation (Routledge), co-author of Queer Theory Now: From Foundations to Futures (Bloomsbury) with Dr Whitney Monaghan, and lead co-editor of the collection Taylor Swift: Culture, Capital, & Critique (Routledge) with Dr Eloise Faichney, Dr Rebecca Trelease, and Dr Emma Whatman. She has published widely in highly regarded Gender and Cultural Studies journals, including Signs: Journal of Women in Culture and Society, Sexualities, and Girlhood Studies.

Her non-academic writing is inflected with theory and memoir and has appeared across a range of publications including Overland, Meanjin and Sydney Review of Books. When Hannah is not researching gender and sexuality, you can find her writing poetry.

Hannah is a passionate advocate for social justice issues relating to work, gender, and sexuality. Hannah is a committed unionist, and has been actively involved with the National Tertiary Education Union since 2016. Hannah champions trans and queer rights, and is also a raging bisexual (emphasis on rage).
